Pinwheels
1. Cut a sheet of red, white, or blue construction paper into a
9-inch square. Repeat for each guest.
2. Draw diagonal lines from the corners of the squares to the middle.
3. Let the kids decorate both sides of the paper with stickers,
stars, and felt pens. Cut along the lines, leaving about a half an inch
in the middle don't cut all the way through.
4. Bend every other corner to the middle and poke a thumbtack through
the tips and the center of the pinwheel. Push the thumbtack into a pencil
or dowel near one end, leaving space between it and the pinwheel to allow
the pinwheel to move.
5. Blow the pinwheel or swing it through the air.
Fun-to-make Fan
1. Pass out red, white, and blue construction paper to the guests.
2. Let them decorate the paper with stars, stickers, and felt pens.
3. Have them fold the paper, lengthwise, accordion style, and tape
the bottom end closed. Allow the top of the fan to fall open, then fan
yourself to keep cool in the hot weather.
American Flags
1. Make your own flags out of cotton fabric, using fabric pens
to add the details. Be creative and design your own new American flag
if you like.
2. Talk about your flags when they're finished and why you designed
them that way.
