Origins of an Ingredient

There are 4 different peanut varieties grown in the US, Runner, Spanish, Valencia and Virginia.  Runner peanuts are mainly grown in Alabama, Florida and Georgia, and over half of the Runner peanuts grown in the United States are used to make peanut butter.

While peanuts are grown in 13 of the United States, Georgia plants more peanuts than any other state. In fact, most of the peanuts used in Little Debbie Peanut Butter Crunch Bars are grown in Georgia.

Did you know that peanuts are actually not nuts? They are legumes. They grow underground rather than on trees. Peanuts more closely resemble beans and peas, which are edible seeds enclosed in pods.

The average American consumes more than six pounds of peanuts and peanut butter products each year, according to the National Peanut Board.

Jimmy Carter wasn't the only former presidential peanut farmer. Thomas Jefferson was also a man with a taste for cultivating peanuts!
