McKee Foods, parent company of Little Debbie, has pledged to help communities across America find ways to enjoy the outdoors through the Outdoor Happiness Movement (OH!). By sponsoring outdoor projects along the East Coast, West Coast, and the Midwest, a goal of 50 projects in 50 states is expected to be completed by 2018.
In this OH! update, we are highlighting a trail rehab project in New York's Bear Mountain State Park. Situated 40-miles upriver from Manhattan, this special place is one of the most visited parts of the Appalachian Trail. From the novice nature lover to the experienced hiker, the park attracts thousands of visitors from all over the country each year. Such traffic requires quite a bit of upkeep, and that is what attracted OH! most to help with the rehabilitation project.
Since 2006, volunteers have crafted more than 1,000 hand-hewn steps and constructed over a mile of tread way on the Appalachian Trail and Bear Mountain's connecting network of side trails. This includes handicapped accessible areas and advanced loops for hikers. With the help of funds received on behalf of Outdoor Happiness, the rehab is on its way to being completed!
